About Style Categories
Beer styles are typically classified by category and
style or type. The intent of categorization is to provide
beer judges beers of a similar type to be judged against
each other in a competition flight. The categorization
is arbitrary and can vary from competition to competition
and may change over time. The most common beer style
categorization is published by the BJCP
(Beer Judge Certification Program)--the
AHA
(American Homebrewers' Association) has adopted these guidelines.
Some competition organizers create their own style categories and
style specifications. The bottom line
is there is a lot of room for interpretation and the brewer must
beware of what style guidelines are being used
for a given competition.
